MTSU Student Murder Shocks Campus: Vigil Held

On Wednesday, hundreds of students, family, faculty, and friends of the Late Tina Stewart gathered to pay their respects to a fallen member of the MTSU  Lady Raiders team.

According to an article on http://www.dnj.com/  of Mufreesboro, the reverent crowd that filled Murphy Center Wednesday night stood to show its respect when K.C. Anuna finished talking about his girlfriend, the late Tina Stewart.
"She loved the game of basketball," said Anuna, a member of the MTSU Blue Raiders basketball team who dated the junior guard on the women's team. "Since her freshman year, she's grown a lot."
Stewart, of Memphis, died Wednesday at her off-campus apartment from a stabbing wound. Murfreesboro Police have accused her freshman roommate Shanterrica Madden, 18, of first-degree murder in the case.
Anuna stood behind a lectern in the middle of the basketball court and talked about a young woman who kept him in check and encouraged him to thrive as he did for her. When he finished, MTSU President Sidney McPhee hugged Anuna.

Tina Stewart of Memphis, TN averaged 5.5 points per game

Enlarged photos of Stewart and a framed pink No. 20 uniform adorned the presentation area along with flowers and plants. The men's and women's teams, dressed in their team warmups, sat on either side of the lectern.

At times, the sounds of crying from a female player or audience member echoed through the Monte Hale Arena, especially when MTSU's trombone and tuba musicians played "Alma Mater" and "Tennessee Waltz." Players and others held burning candles during the last song.

McPhee also shared many thoughts with folks seated on the north half of the arena.

"On behalf of our university community, who loved and treasured Tina, our hearts are heavy with grief, and our thoughts and prayers are with her family," he said. "As the president of our university, but also as a father myself, I cannot adequately convey my sorrow and grief over the loss of Tina Stewart, a wonderful, talented and vibrant young woman and gifted student athlete."

This is so sad and tragic? Another senseless murder that probably could have been avoided.
